Position

MIO is seeking a professionally motivated candidate to join the firm as a Senior Tax Specialist. The position entails supporting the MIO Investment Advisory team in advising Partners on tax-related investment and wealth planning issues. This is a full-time opportunity based in Atlanta, GA reporting to MIO’s Director of Tax, who sits in New York. COVID-19 vaccination is mandatory for this position (subject to accommodation for health and religious reasons).

Primary Responsibilities

  • Function as an in-house expert on sophisticated financial, trust, estate, and gift tax planning matters as well as personal income tax matters and issues for our HNW/UHNW Partners
  • Support MIO investment advisors in Partner discussions regarding tax-related portfolio and wealth planning topics
  • Directly engage with Partners’ personal tax advisors and estate attorneys
  • Serve as a liaison with other outside financial planners to help Partners frame the right questions and confirm suitability of trust and account structures
  • Proactively research the tax environment for HNW/UHNW Partners in the US and provide updates on proposed tax changes as well as written knowledge briefs\
  • Provide coaching and training to the MIO Investment Advisory team regarding the aforementioned tax matters
  • Build tax knowledge base in other important jurisdictions, including European countries such as the UK and Germany
  • Participate in ad hoc special projects and help develop process improvements related to increasing efficiency of the group

Desired Background

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting or taxation
  • Licensed CPA or attorney with an LLM in tax, and/or master’s in taxation (MST) from an accredited university, ideally with an additional qualification as CFP
  • 8-15 years of professional experience with a strong background in personal tax, retirement, multi-generational, and estate planning topics for HNW/UHNW individuals in a wealth management, legal, hedge fund, private equity, or family office environment
  • Deep understanding of personal income taxes, investment taxation, and estate taxes as well as planning strategies
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail and accuracy; problem analysis and resolution
  • Ability to work efficiently in a deadline-oriented environment
  • Interest in engaging with investors and their external advisors as well as cross-functionally with MIO colleagues (investment advisory, finance/tax, and senior management)
  • Integrity and maturity in dealing with confidential financial matters
  • Awareness of and interest in international taxation is a plus
  • Experience in using trust or insurance products for estate planning purposes is a plus
